BLC End Three Game Run With Loss in Cobourg

By Mark Stehlin

The Brooklin Lacrosse Club (BLC) were in Cobourg last night to tangle with the Kodiaks at the end of a three-game in five-night run. It all started last week with a 9-8 OT win over Owen Sound at home on Wednesday and a 13-9 win in Peterborough just a day later. It was not Brooklin’s night, however, as the Kodiaks hung on for the 11-10 win, leaving BLC at 7-3 on the season and Cobourg sits at 4-6 record as both teams have crossed the mid-point of the campaign.

Steven Orleman took to the BLC pipes against his former team while Jackson Brown was summoned to the Kodiaks net. Brooklin outshot their hosts 59-49 as both keepers gave their teams a chance at victory.

The first period on this hot and muggy night at the Cobourg Community Centre ended deadlocked at 4-4. Will MacLeod and Taggart Clark lead the way for BLC with a pair of goals each while Alex Marinier, MacLeod’s former teammate in Junior A with the Burlington Blaze, added a hat trick for his Kodiaks.  Both were selected in the first round of the 2025 Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) entry draft Entry, MacLeod went second overall while Marinier went fifth overall.

“I thought we started the game well. Our line-up had a mix of players, so we had to rely on their ability to find each other. While there were times it looked a bit sloppy, we got the best out of those we had in the line-up and maybe Cobourg were able to make the best of their plays” said Joel Johnson, head coach.

The second period was less offensive as the Kodiaks managed to get three past Orleman and Taggart Clark added his third for BLC. Cobourg took the 7-5 lead heading into the final 20 minutes.

Another 2025 MSL entry draft pick for BLC, Justin Lee notched his first of the season to close the gap for his team to start the last period. The teams went up and down the floor and each had offensive opportunities. With just over two minutes on the clock, Aaron Wood scored the eventual winner to make it 11-8 for the home side. BLC did not make it a comfortable night for the Kodiak faithful, however as MacLeod fired home two late goals, one with 1:59 on the clock and one with 0:24 showing. That was as close as BLC got as the Kodiaks hung on for the 11-10 win.

“It’s always tough to lose as we’re all competitors. It would have been great to respond with a win last night, particularly coming off that big win in Peterborough on Thursday.  That didn’t happen but the effort was there and that’s all we can ask for as coaches. There is a great deal of pride in wearing either uniform under the BLC umbrella and that’s great for the organization, “ added Johnson.

Scoring for BLC – MacDonnell (0,3) Woods (0,1) MacLeod (4,0) Columbus (0,1) Clark (3,0) Wills (0,1) Lee (1,0) Simard (0,1) Westley (2,3) C Kearnan (0,6)

The visitors were assessed five minor penalties in the final frame compared to one for Cobourg, and the Kodiaks converted two of those power play chances to goals. The Kodiaks took three minors in the second while BLC avoided the sin bin,  the BLC power play unit scored one of their chances in that period.

Brooklin will host the Six Nations Chiefs on Saturday June 28 at 8 pm for their annual Scott McMichael Minor Lacrosse Night. All minor players are encouraged to wear their jerseys to the game for free admission. For those not familiar, McMichael was a former Brooklin Redmen player who supported young players engaging in minor lacrosse and learning to love the sport as much as he did. The Brooklin Merchants will host the Six Nations Rivermen as part of a double header on Saturday at 4 pm.
