BLC Honoured Redmen Legend Scott McMichael Tonight and Prevailed with a Win in his Memory

By Mark Stehlin

The Brooklin Lacrosse Club celebrated minor lacrosse in Durham Region with their annual Scott McMichael Minor Lacrosse Night Wednesday evening and came away with an 8-5 win over the Cobourg Kodiaks. The ceremony before the game included his son Ryan, wife Jacqueline, mother Donna and sister Christine. Fittingly, June 19th would have also marked Scott’s 60th birthday. Through the use of technology, younger son Mitch and his family were able to watch from British Columbia.

Period scores were 2-2 in the first, 5-2 for Brooklin in the second and 1-1 in the third, giving the home side enough in the game for the 8-5 win and all-important two points to keep them atop the Major Series Lacrosse league standings at 6-1.

Head coach, Joel Johnson said “this game showed the expectations that this club has set for itself.”

He expressed some frustration, adding “there were parts of the game that were not good enough and not up to the level that we expect from ourselves.”

He gave credit to his defense and goaltending “Higgy stood on his head and the defence made it difficult for Cobourg to set up the way they wanted on offence.”

He added that with Zach Higgins in net partnered with Riley Hutchcraft “MSL defensive player of the year in 2023” shows how “deep we are deep in that position.”
