BLC Take Care of Business and Roll Over the Rock
By Mark Stehlin
The Brooklin Lacrosse Club (BLC) dominated both ends of the floor en route to a 13-5 win over the Oakville Rock at Iroquois Park Sports Centre (IPSC) last night. Chris Boushy and Connor Kearnan with four goals apiece led the offense. The club was also happy to welcome back goaltender Zach Higgins after he took the first six games off to celebrate the birth of his son.
The offense erupted out of the gate and took it to the Rock from the opening whistle. After a pair of goals from rookie Will MacLeod and singles to Sean Westley and Boushy the home side built a hard-earned 4-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes.
The Rock did manage an early goal in the middle frame to show some life but a dominant 6-2 run saw BLC hold a 10-2 lead over their guests with twenty minutes remaining.
Each team managed three goals in that final frame. The visitors made a push and scored the first three goals in that third period in a comeback bid and it was 10-5. There would be no momentum shift on this night however, as BLC found a new gear and singles to Brady Kearnan, Boushy and Clark assured the 13-5 victory was in the book. After a loss to Peterborough to open the season at home, BLC have now reeled off three straight wins on the new turf at IPSC
In addition to welcoming Zach Higgins back to the fold, BLC have also added Taggart Clark to the lineup this season. Long time fans will recognize the surname as he is the son of former Brooklin Redmen player Glenn Clark, a member of the most recent Mann Cup team in 2000.
“That’s the kind of ball that we want to play, that’s BLC ball and I know I’m new here but that seems like the kind of game we like to play, good on transition and strong out the back door,” said Clark outside a jubilant BLC locker room.
“I played my first three years of senior in Nanaimo in the WLA (Western Lacrosse Association) but I felt like it was time to make my way back to Ontario and it worked out well that II could land here where my dad has some heritage,” added Clark.
Scoring – B Kearnan (1,0) C Kearnan (4,4) Boushy (4,2) White (0,1) Clark (1,1) Westley (1,4) Volkov (0,1) T Cook (0,5) Columbus (0,2) MacLeod (2,1)
Next up for BLC is a road trip on Saturday to Owen Sound for a date with the NorthStars and then home next Wednesday at 8 pm to host the same NorthStars team.
Notes – Kearnan and Boushy on the backs of their performances tonight are in the top five of the league scoring race. Kearnan in 5 games has 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points good for first overall. Boushy in five games has 14 goals, and nine assists for 23 points and is in third place.
The three-man officiating crew lost a member for the third period as one went down with an injury.
