Brooklin Redmen Kick Off 2019 Campaign In Early June
By Sam Laskaris
Yet another winter storm is creating havoc today.
But fans can start making some spring and summer plans now. That’s because Major Series Lacrosse released its full 2019 regular season schedule today.
All six league entrants will play an 18-game schedule. That’s a slight increase from a year ago when teams had 16 contests each. The Brooklin Redmen will play all of their home matches on Wednesday nights at Iroquois Park Sports Complex in Whitby. All games are scheduled to start at 8 p.m.
Brooklin will kick off its season on June 2 on the road versus the Cobourg Kodiaks. That tilt,, at the Cobourg Community Centre, has a 6 p.m. faceoff.
The Redmen will also square off against the Kodiaks again for their home opener on June 5. This year’s regular season schedule has created a slight imbalance. For the Redmen this translates into playing four of their league rivals – Cobourg, Brampton Excelsiors, Oakville Rock and Six Nations Chiefs – four times each, twice at home and twice on the road.
And Brooklin will only play the two-time defending league and Mann Cup champion Peterborough Lakers twice during the regular season.
Redmen president Dean Link said the club has an obvious goal this year. “Winning the Mann Cup,” he said, adding he believes the Brooklin squad has the talent to not only win the league title but the national championship as well. “The way I look at it nobody took Peterborough as far as we did in a series during the last two years of the playoffs.”
In 2017 the Lakers downed the Redmen in six games in a best-of-seven semifinal series. Peterborough went on defeat Six Nations in five contests in the MSL finals. And then last year Brooklin and Peterborough needed the maximum seven games in their semifinal series. The Lakers won Game 7 and then took out Oakville in six contests in the MLS championship series.
As for this year’s regular season action, the Lakers will travel to Whitby on June 26. And Peterborough will host the Redmen on June 6.
The MSL schedule begins on May 26 when Brampton visits Peterborough. Two nights later the Chiefs will host the Rock.
Link is anxiously anticipating the 2019 campaign. “I’m pretty excited about it,” he said. “We’ve got a great team. We’re waiting to see all the players that will be coming back to us. But we’ve got some depth and our affiliation now with the (Senior B) Merchants will help too.”
