Gutsy Effort Not Enough in BLC Loss to Chiefs

By Mark Stehlin

Despite a solid effort in net by rookie Thomas Kiazyk and a four-goal performance from Dyson Williams the Brooklin Lacrosse Club came up short in a 9-7 loss to the league-leading Six Nations Chiefs last night at Iroquois Park Sports Centre. The loss leaves BLC with a record of 7-8 and extends the Chiefs’ perfect season to 14-0.

“Overall I thought we played well, had we limited our turnovers it may have been a different result. Unfortunately, we gave them too many chances, we played on the defensive zone for a minute or a minute and a half and against a team like that they will make you pay,” said defensive coach Brad Reed.

The game started well for the home side as Williams beat his Oshawa Firewolves teammate Doug Jamieson, with a well-placed shot just 38 seconds into the game. Williams would add another on the power play minutes later to extend the early lead. The Chiefs rallied for three straight to end the period and took a slim 3-2 lead into the first break.

Chris Boushy mirrored Williams as he scored just 32 seconds into the middle frame on a power play marker to even the contest. The Chiefs countered on a power play of their only own minutes later. BLC found a spark as a short-handed marker from Williams with 18:21 showing on the clock.  An inability to derive any momentum off that goal hurt the homeside. It was the Chiefs again who scored three unanswered to take a 7-4 lead into the final frame. The Chiefs were given a penalty shot in the middle of that second period as BLC were assessed an Illegal Substitution penalty with the extra man stopping a scoring chance. Lyle Thompson took the penalty shot for the Chiefs and missed the net.

It was the Chiefs who struck first and early in that final frame to extend the lead to 8-4. The homeside made a game of it as Dan Lintner was successful on his patented dive across the crease. Soon after, newcomer, Chase Scanlan scored his team-leading 20th goal of the season to make it 9-6 with under 10 minutes to play. BLC were pressing and kept the Chiefs at bay. Williams with his fourth made it 9-7 in the dying seconds.

“It’s been amazing so far, everyone from the staff to my teammates everyone has been great,” said Scanlan after the game.

“I think we played well, I am happy with the effort and our goalie played outstanding tonight. I am excited to play with this group of guys and every game now is a must win, with our backs against the wall we will play hard from here to the end of the season,” added Scanlan.

Next up , BLC will welcome the Brampton Excelsiors to IPSC on Wednesday July 22 at 8 pm.
