Led by Lintner, Redmen Season Opens With 11-10 Win
On the back of a five goal, nine point outburst from Dan Lintner, the Brooklin Redmen (1-0-0) hung on for the 11-10 win over the visiting Brampton Excelsiors (0-3-1). With the NLL down to its final playoff weekend (Rochester vs Saskatchewan featuring many Redmen players) a group of young local talent was pressed into action and showed the coaches, GM and fans how they could play.
After opening the scoring, the visitors went on to win the opening frame 3-2. It was all Redmen in the second as they took that frame 7-2 for the 9-5 lead after forty minutes and looked to be in control. Lintner scored his second and third of the night in the opening seven minutes of the middle frame to give the Redmen their first lead of the night.
Referees Andrew Ecclestone and Kyle Kropman let the players play for the most part, save for a skirmish late in the second as Colton Watkinson for the Redmen and Wayne Van Every of the Excelsiors were sent off for roughing majors. They assessed Brampton 15 minutes on 6 infractions and Brooklin 9 minutes on 3 infractions, the Redmen were 4 for 5 on the extra man and the Excelsiors 1 for 2.
The visitors reeled off four unanswered to open the final period and tied the game at 9-9 six and a half minutes to play. The Redmen answered back with two late to take a 2 goal lead with under two minutes to play, other than a short handed marker by the visitors with a handful of seconds remaining that was as close as the game would get and the Redmen hung on for the 11-10 win.
The Redmen will travel down the QEW on Friday night for an 8:00 pm game vs the Oakville Rock. They return home on Wednesday June 13 as they host Cobourg. That game will feature the 1968 Mann Cup winning Redmen team and special appearance Walter Gretzky who will perform the opening face-off.
