Redmen Hang on for Dramatic 9-8 Win over Chiefs

The two teams that met at Iroquois Park on Wednesday night experienced very different weeks. The Redmen lost to the Oakville Rock on Monday by a final of 13-5 in what was described as a flat and offensively challenged contest, the Chiefs on the other hand hosted the Peterborough Lakers on Tuesday night and were trailing 7-4 in the third period only to rattle off four straight goals in an astonishing one minute and 23 seconds to take the 8-7 win.

The Redmen came out of the gate hungry scoring the first two goals and capitalizing on a team that played the night before and was shaking off bus legs. The Chiefs regrouped and scored three straight for a 3-2 lead after the first period.

The Chiefs lost track of time during the first intermission and were nowhere to be found as Brent McAuley whistled the teams to centre for the face-off, he assessed the visitors a two minute bench minor for delay of game which the Redmen turned into a power play goal to knot the game at 3-3. The Redmen were not going to forget the loss on Monday and made certain to dig deep, they scored the next four unanswered to take a 7-3 lead with five minutes left on the clock in the middle frame. The Chiefs did score one on the power play and it was 7-4 for the home side after forty minutes.

The Redmen opened the lead to 9-4 with two goals in 30 seconds before five minutes were off the clock in the third and looked to be cruising to an important win. The visitors channeled the results of their game a mere 24 hours earlier and went on a spree of their own. Randy Staats continued to impress for the Chiefs as he was in on almost every goal of the night, he scored twice in the third period and assisted on one. Mike Poulin played an incredible game in the Redmen night and kept the Chiefs at bay as they pulled Dillon Ward for the extra attacker in the final three minutes that got them a goal on two occasions. The Redmen registered the two points with the 9-8 win and are now 4-1-1 on the season good for first overall at the one-third mark of the 18 game regular season.

Shots on goal registered at 55-47 for the Chiefs, the Redmen went two for three on the power play while the Chiefs were three for four.

Redmen are in Ohsweken on Tuesday June 21 to battle the Chiefs and host Oakville back at IPSC on Wednesday June 22 at 8 pm. Lacrosse Day in Durham is also approaching on June 25 as the Redmen host Peterborough to end a day of action featuring the Gaels, Warriors and Merchants all in action.
