Redmen Open 50th Season with a Win
The Brooklin Redmen are celebrating their 50th anniversary and started the regular season at home with a solid 12-5 win over the visiting Brampton Excelsiors. Prior to the game, the team honoured a number of past captains dating back to the 1968 and 1969 Mann Cup winning teams up to current leader Derek Suddons.
Dan Lintner led the way for the home side with four goals and a helper, Austin Shanks netted three and Ryan Keenan added his first and second in a Redmen uniform with proud father Derek watching as a new member of the Redmen coaching staff.
The Redmen took an early 2-0 lead but after the first frame the Excelsiors were up 4-3. The visitors stretched the lead to 5-3 but Phil Caputo’s goal six minutes into the second period would be the last of the night for the Excelsiors as the Redmen rattled off eight straight over the rest of that period and into the third to preserve the win.
Blair Ferguson and Matt Garrison had a fairly easy time of it as they assessed four minors to Brampton and three to the Redmen. The Redmen capitalized twice on the man advantage while Brampton had no luck with their power play. With five minutes to go in the third Shawn Williams and Jayson Crawford from Brampton got into a shoving match possibly over who looked better wearing jersey # 51, we’ll give Williams the nod on that one.
Redmen are on the road Thursday June 2, 2016 in Peterborough and Saturday June 4, 2016 in Cobourg to meet the Kodiaks (relocated from Kitchener Waterloo) before they are home Wednesday June 8, 2016 to host those same Kodiaks.
