2017 Draft Recap: Redmen Select Four
The Major Series Lacrosse Entry Draft was held Sunday January 29th, 2017 hosted by the Brooklin Redmen. The draft consisted of five rounds, with six picks in each round for a total of thirty picks amongst the teams. Each team could protect up to four graduating juniors from their affiliate. The Redmen held a pick in each of the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th rounds.
Prior to the draft, the Redmen protected Whitby Warrior graduate Connor Laird. The 6’1” Laird has spent the last four seasons with the Warriors putting up 27 points in 75 games. Laird was a member of the Minto Cup Championship team in 2013. Laird spent time with the Green Gaels Junior B team as and is a graduate of Whitby Minor Lacrosse. Laird is a junior captain at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO, USA.
In the 1st round 5th overall the Redmen selected transition player Austin Divitcos, from the Orangeville Northmen. Austin played 4 seasons with the Northmen tallying 35 points in 65 games, and played a key role in the Northmen run to the 2016 Minto Cup. Divitcos is currently a junior with Rutgers University lacrosse program in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
In the 3rd round the Redmen selected defenseman Sean Darroch from the Whitby Warriors. Sean played 54 games for the Warriors, putting up 19 points. Darroch is currently a sophomore and teammate of Laird’s at Lindenwood University.
In the 4th round the Redmen would select Rylee McKinnon from the Clarington Shamrox. Rylee is a defensive player who was selected by the Saskatchewan Rush in the 2016 NLL Draft. McKinnon won the Meredith Cup with the Shamrox last season, and the 2013 Minto Cup as a member of the Warriors.
In the 5th round the Redmen selected Nick Karam from the Whitby Warriors. Nick, an offensive player played two seasons with the Warriors, and currently attends Trent University.
