Rough Stretch for BLC With Second Consecutive Road Loss

By Mark Stehlin

Three weeks ago, the Brooklin Lacrosse Club (BLC) left the Peterborough Memorial Centre on a high after a solid 12-10 win over the Lakers. Fast forward those 21 days and it was a very different feel outside the dressing room thanks to a 12-6 defeat.  This marked the second consecutive road loss for BLC that leaves them with a 5-5 record, tied with Oakville and Peterborough, also with 10 points but both have games in hand.

It was Peterborough who opened the scoring as the crowd welcomed Thomas Hoggarth back into the line-up. Dan Lintner with his 12th of the season tied the affair shortly after. Fans for both teams were impressed as he took flight across the crease and fired it behind Laker starter Drew Hutchison in what has become his  patented move. The Lakers found another gear and in the last eight minutes of the first period scored three straight to take a 4-1 lead to break.

In the second, head coach Joel Johnson was forced into a goalie change. With the score 6-1 and 16:58 showing on the clock, started Steven Orleman gave way to back-up Aden Walsh. Dyson Williams took advantage of a Peterborough penalty and strode from left to right at the top of the slot in front of Hutchinson and fired it home. That goal sparked a minor offensive flurry by BLC, and Walsh settled into the game nicely to give the team some push. With the score at 8-2 in the dying seconds Chase Scanlan tallied to make it 8-3. As Scanlan sprinted up the floor, Walsh fed him the ball on a string and, as he was being man-handled by a Laker defender, he put the ball into the back of the net.

Any momentum that BLC may have built from Scanlan’s dramatic goal was quickly snuffed out by the home team. The Lakers reeled off four straight and chased Walsh to the bench with 13:40 on the clock and a score of 12-3. Orleman grabbed his stick and helmet and made his way back to the cage. It appeared that change worked and BLC found the back of the net three times in the dying minutes. Dyson Williams on a pass from his Oshawa Firewolves teammate, Will Johansen, scored short-handed with 7:44 remaining but 12-6 was as close as BLC would get in the contest.

There will be very little rest as Saturday June 27 is Scott McMichael Minor Lacrosse Night and BLC will host the defending Mann Cup champion Six Nations Chiefs at 8 pm. The Brooklin Merchants as part of a double header will host the Six Nations Rivermen at 4 pm.
