Shorthanded Merchants down host Crushers
by Sam Laskaris
A shorthanded Brooklin Merchants squad managed to pull out a Mother’s Day victory.
The Merchants registered a 12-9 win over the host Clearview Crushers in an Ontario Series Lacrosse contest on Sunday. The Merchants dressed 14 runners (four under the maximum allowed) and two goalies for the match, held at the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex in Newmarket. With the W, the Merchants improved their record to 2-1 this season.
Devin Pipher led the Brooklin squad with four goals on Sunday. Darren Elliott added a hat trick for the Merchants. Scoring two goals each were Josh Toguri and Ben Page-Laycock, a member of England’s national box lacrosse squad that captured the European title last year. Eddie Renaud had the other Brooklin goal.
The Merchants are back in action this Saturday. They will hit the road to square off against the Owen Sound North Stars. That game, at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre, has an opening faceoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
