Sunday Contest in Owen Sound Ends a Busy and Successful Stretch for BLC and MLC

By Mark Stehlin

On Wednesday night the Brooklin Lacrosse Club (BLC) hosted Owen Sound and won 16-11, on Friday night the Merchants Lacrosse Club (MLC) hosted Clearview and won 15-14, on Saturday afternoon BLC traveled to Owen Sound and won 10-5 and on Sunday afternoon MLC traveled to Owen Sound and took the 11-4 win to improve to 7-1 on the season.

While this busy stretch may not be ideal, one may argue that the positive results can set both teams up for success moving forward. The last three games featured a handful of players that suited up for both teams. A shout-out as well to equpment managers, trainers, coaches and managers who were able to navigate this busy run of games.

Sunday’s game, as far as the score-line was concerned, was interesting. The teams were deadlocked at 4-4 after the first 20 minutes. The Merchants managed to hold their hosts off the board for the entirety of the second and third periods, winning the second 4-0 and the third 3-0.

Ryan Degerdon said after the game “that was the best 60 minutes of the season for this team from start to finish, a complete game and the players answered the bell”.

He added “there were a couple of games this year where we left some things at the door, that was not the case tonight."

Degerdon said “this was a statement game from goaltending to defense and offense, a new benchmark was set tonight.” He added he was proud of the handful of players that played all three weekend games and recognized the effort put forth by all members of both squads.

Scoring for the Merchants – Renaud (0,2) Breyo (0,2) Carrigan (2,1) Watts (0,1) Goodchild (1,0) Boyd (2,1) Elliott (0,5) D Pipher (1,1) Perroni (1,0) Pulera (1,0) P Pipher (1,1) Hickey (2,0). Deacon Knott was in the pipes for Brooklin and stopped 32 of the 36 shots he faced for the win.

The Merchants (7-1) will return home to the friendly confines of Luther Vipond Memorial Arena on Friday June 7 at 8:00 p.m. to host the Ennismore James Gang (0-7). The Brooklin Lacrosse Club (2,0) are home at Iroquois Park Sports Centre on Wednesday June 5 at 8:00 p.m. to host the Six Nations Chiefs (1-0).
