Redmen Need OT to Defeat the Kodiaks

by: Mark Stehlin

On the heels of a commanding 15-4 win the other night in Cobourg, the Redmen played host to the Kodiaks tonight at IPSC. Redmen fans wanted more of the same but the guests had other ideas as they lead the Redmen for essentially the entire game. Last week, the Redmen opened the 2017 season campaign and won 11-10 in overtime and would need overtime again this week.  A vintage goal from veteran Derek Hopcroft, followed by another from him seconds later in the extra frame, sealed the win for Brooklin by a final score of 10-8.

Cobourg got on the board first with the opening salvo mid-way through the first, the Redmen tied it but the Kodiaks scored late for a 2-1 lead after twenty minutes.

The middle frame was a game of runs, the Kodiaks scored three times in the first seven minutes to open the gap to 5-1 before the Redmen bench woke up and tallied four uanswered of their own to knot the game at 5-5. The Kodiaks got one more to preserve a 6-5 lead going in to the second break.

The Kodiaks opened the scoring in each of the first two periods as well as the third and OT for good measure. It was 7-5 for Cobourg before Mark Cockerton and Kyle Whitlow scored to send the game to OT tied at 7-7. The third period was also highlighted by a 12 penalty outburst that resulted in fighting majors and game misconducts that referees Roger Nurse and Kyle Kropman took a few minutes to sort out.

As noted, the Kodiaks opened the scoring in OT only to have Dan Lintner tie it again at 8-8 six seconds later directly off the draw. Derek Hopcroft as he does so well, loaded up his big shot from the slot and found the net behind Rance Vigneux twice in an 18 second span to give the Redmen their first lead of the night and they would hang on for the win.

Other scorers for the Redmen were Lintner with two and singles to Brodie Tutton, Reilly O'Connor, Austin Murphy, Kyle Whitlow, Mark Cockerton and Mitch McMichael.

The Redmen have a Monday stop in Oakville before hosting Peterborough next Wednesday June 14 at IPSC.
